Last Sunday, March 2, Sandra Cuevas shared a post on her social media with the phrase "This is where we are from." In the images that accompanied her message, a man wearing a black t-shirt with red stripes on the shoulders could be seen, who turned out to be Alejandro Gilmare Mendoza, identified as the alleged leader of the criminal group "La Chokiza."
The coincidence that both Cuevas and Mendoza were present at the same event generated controversy among internet users. Journalist Carlos Jiménez was the one who initially reported on Mendoza's arrest, carried out by the Secretariat of Citizen Security of Mexico City in collaboration with the Attorney General's Office of the State of Mexico.
Carlos Jiménez posted on his social media an image of the moment of the capture, in which Mendoza is seen being taken out of a red Dodge car, alongside his companion. In addition, the journalist shared another photograph in which the arrested man appears next to the former mayor of the Cuauhtémoc borough, Sandra Cuevas, at the same event at the Tlatelolco Convention Center.
The criminal group "La Chokiza" operated in the State of Mexico, mainly in Ecatepec, where it targeted individuals who could not repay the loans they had been given. Since early 2024, there had been an arrest warrant against Alejandro Gilmare, alias "El Choko," for his involvement in these criminal activities.
